Set on a small island in Constitution Gardens on the National Mall, this understated memorial honors the fifty-six men who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Rather than statues, it presents their signatures carved into low granite blocks arranged in a semicircle, each with the signer's name, occupation and home. Reached by a footbridge across the garden's lake, the setting is deliberately reflective and pastoral. Dedicated in 1984, it invites visitors to trace the founders in a corner often missed by mall crowds.
