This monument in a park on the slopes near central Seoul commemorates the nationwide independence demonstrations of 1919 against colonial rule. Reliefs and sculptural groups depict crowds raising the national flag and the students and citizens who led the protests. Set among wooded paths, the memorial marks one of the defining episodes in the movement for self-determination. A historic pavilion nearby is where the declaration of independence was first read aloud.
