This series of bronze sculptures stands on Custom House Quay along the River Liffey in Dublin, commemorating the Great Famine of the 1840s that killed roughly a million people and drove many more to emigrate. Unveiled in 1997 and created by Rowan Gillespie, the figures are gaunt, ragged, and emaciated, shown trudging toward the ships that would carry them abroad. One carries a limp body over his shoulder, and a skeletal dog follows the mournful procession along the quay.
