This is the principal Catholic church of Dublin, tucked into a side street off O'Connell Street rather than occupying a grand civic site, reflecting the constraints on Catholic building when it was completed in 1825. Its Greek Revival design centres on a portico modelled on a classical temple, with a barrel-vaulted interior. The church is well known for its Palestrina Choir, in which the tenor John McCormack once sang. As the pro-cathedral, it has hosted major national funerals and religious ceremonies for two centuries.
