This fountain forms the centrepiece of the Piazza della Repubblica in Rome, near the main railway station. Its present form dates from the early twentieth century, when four large bronze figures of nude nymphs, or naiads, were added, each reclining on a creature symbolising a different type of water: a sea horse, a water snake, a swan, and a lizard. At the centre stands a muscular figure wrestling a dolphin. The sensual figures caused scandal when unveiled but became a beloved landmark.
