This grand semicircular square near Termini station was laid out in the late nineteenth century as Rome expanded to become the national capital, its sweeping colonnaded facades echoing the curve of the ancient Baths of Diocletian behind. At its heart splashes the Fountain of the Naiads, whose bronze figures of nymphs caused a scandal for their sensual poses when unveiled. The basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli occupies the old bath hall on one side.
