This grand monument on the Place des Quinconces in Bordeaux honours the Girondin deputies executed during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror. Completed in 1902, it comprises a tall column crowned by a bronze figure of Liberty breaking her chains, flanked by two spectacular fountains. The bronze groups include rearing horses with fish-like limbs and allegorical figures of the Republic. The horses were hidden during the German occupation before being restored to the ensemble.
