This tall Gothic bell tower stands apart from the neighbouring cathedral, built in the fifteenth century to hold bells whose vibrations were feared would crack the church itself. Topped by a statue of the Virgin added later, its ornate stonework rises above the square that bears the same name. Visitors who climb its spiral staircase reach a viewing gallery with a wide panorama over the terracotta rooftops and the river beyond. The tower honours a medieval archbishop who championed the city's university.
