This ornate late-medieval gateway once formed a triumphal entrance to Bordeaux from the river, blending defensive design with decorative Gothic detail. Built at the close of the fifteenth century, its steep conical roofs, turrets, and carved dedication to a French king give it a fairy-tale silhouette. Positioned between the old town and the quays, it survived the demolition of the city walls that once flanked it. Inside, a small exhibition and a climb to the upper level reward visitors with views over the historic rooftops and the Garonne.
