One of the largest art museums in the Gulf, this Sharjah institution occupies a traditional-style building in the emirate's heritage arts area. Its permanent collection is notable for eighteenth and nineteenth-century Orientalist paintings and works on paper depicting Arabia by European travellers. Galleries also present modern and contemporary Arab art and rotate ambitious temporary exhibitions. Central to the long-running Sharjah art scene, the museum anchors a district of galleries and calligraphy studios.
