This historic port town on the harbour south of Christchurch was the arrival point for many of the region's first organised settlers, who crossed the hills on foot to reach the plains. Its steep streets hold heritage timber buildings, cafes and a lively arts and music scene, and it serves as the main deep-water port for the region. Badly affected by the earthquakes, the town has rebuilt while retaining its character. A road tunnel and the Port Hills connect it to the city.
