This small ivy-clad stone cottage stands within the Fitzroy Gardens near central Melbourne and is often cited as the oldest building in Australia, though it was not built here. Originally the Yorkshire home of the parents of navigator James Cook, it was purchased, dismantled brick by brick and shipped from England, then reassembled in the gardens in 1934 for the city's centenary. Furnished in period style with a cottage garden of English plants, it interprets eighteenth-century domestic life and Cook's Pacific voyages.
