These formal Victorian-era gardens lie on the eastern edge of central Melbourne and are among the city's best-loved green spaces. Laid out in the nineteenth century with avenues of elms arranged in patterns said to echo the Union Jack, they contain fountains, a conservatory and shaded lawns. Their most famous feature is Cooks' Cottage, a small stone house associated with the family of explorer James Cook, dismantled in England and rebuilt here in 1934.
