This small landscaped square in the heart of the Ciudad Vieja occupies the site of the colonial governor's residence, on ground associated with the founding of the city. Redesigned in a French garden style in the early twentieth century, it features curving paths, a wrought-iron fence and an equestrian monument to Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, the city's founder. Surrounded by historic mansions and museums, the shaded plaza offers a quiet pause within the oldest and most atmospheric quarter of Montevideo.
