This Franciscan church near the Plaza de Mayo dates in its present form to the eighteenth century, with a later facade redesigned in a German Baroque manner by architect Ernesto Sackmann. Statues of Franciscan saints and figures such as Dante and Giotto adorn the front. The interior holds a large tapestry, colonial images and an important library. Damaged by fire during civil unrest in the 1950s, the church was restored and remains a working friary in the historic core of the city.
