Parque El Ejido is a large public park marking the transition between Quito's colonial old town and its modern centre. Shaded by mature eucalyptus and other trees, it hosts a weekend open-air art market where painters and craftspeople sell their work along the northern edge. Chess players, families and joggers use its paths and lawns throughout the week. Bordered by cultural institutions, the park has long served as a green meeting ground and one of the busiest recreational spaces in the heart of the capital.
