The Church of El Sagrario in Quito is a richly decorated colonial church adjoining the Metropolitan Cathedral in the historic centre. Built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it is admired for its carved stone screen at the entrance and its interior of gilded altarpieces, painted vaults and a domed crossing. Restoration has revived its vivid Quito School decoration. Though smaller than the neighbouring cathedral, its concentrated ornamentation makes it one of the finest examples of baroque religious art in the capital's old town.
