Set in a former colonial mint building just behind the National Palace, this museum is devoted to the arts and cultures of peoples from around the globe rather than Mexico alone. Its collections gather objects from Egypt, the Near East, Asia, Africa and the ancient Mediterranean, assembled to broaden public understanding of world heritage. The stone courtyard and vaulted rooms once minted the coinage of New Spain, giving the galleries a weighty historic atmosphere. Free admission has long made it a quiet refuge in the busy centre.
