Beacon Hill Park is a large public park on the southern edge of Victoria, laid out in the late nineteenth century on land set aside near the ocean shore. Its winding paths pass ponds, gardens, ancient oaks and a petting zoo, leading to a hilltop with views over the Strait of Juan de Fuca. One of the tallest totem poles in the world once stood among its features, and a marker nearby denotes the western end of a famous highway. The park is a beloved recreational green space for the city.
