Perched on a hill above downtown Nashville, Tennessee's capitol is a Greek Revival landmark completed in 1859 and designed by architect William Strickland, who is buried within its walls. Modeled on an Ionic temple, it lacks a dome, instead crowned by a tower based on a Greek monument. The grounds hold the tomb of President James K. Polk and equestrian statues, and terraced lawns descend toward the river. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark, it is among the oldest working state capitols in the country.
