This restored adobe fort in midtown Sacramento was the nucleus of John Sutter's 1839 agricultural colony, New Helvetia, and a key waypoint for overland pioneers before the Gold Rush transformed California. The thick-walled central building survived while the outer walls were reconstructed, and rooms now display blacksmith and cooper workshops, a bakery, and living quarters. It was near Sutter's operations that gold was discovered in 1848, triggering mass migration.
