California's Neoclassical capitol anchors a large landscaped park in downtown Sacramento, its white dome rising above rows of memorial trees and monuments. Completed in 1874, the building houses the legislature and the governor's office and combines a working seat of government with a museum. Restored period rooms on the ground floor recreate state offices as they appeared around 1900. The surrounding Capitol Park contains a rose garden, a Vietnam veterans memorial, and specimen trees gathered from around the world over more than a century.
