This granite obelisk in Charlestown commemorates the Battle of Bunker Hill, one of the first major engagements of the American Revolution, fought in June 1775. Rising 221 feet, it was completed in 1843 after decades of fundraising, and visitors willing to climb its 294 stone steps are rewarded with views over Boston Harbor and the surrounding neighborhoods. A statue of William Prescott stands at its base, and an adjacent lodge and museum interpret the battle. It marks the northern terminus of the Freedom Trail through the city.
