This Federal-style brick mansion at the foot of Beacon Hill in Boston was the first of three homes designed by Charles Bulfinch for the politician Harrison Gray Otis. Completed in 1796, it survives as a rare intact example of the refined domestic architecture of the early republic, with elegantly proportioned rooms and bold period wallpapers restored to reflect changing tastes. Now the headquarters of a regional preservation organization, it operates as a house museum.
