The seat of the Massachusetts state government sits atop Beacon Hill overlooking Boston Common, its gilded dome a landmark visible across the city. Designed by Charles Bulfinch and built in 1798 on land once owned by John Hancock, it established a template for American statehouse architecture. Visitors can tour the marble halls, the Hall of Flags, and the Senate and House chambers, and see the wooden Sacred Cod hanging in the representatives' chamber.
