Mahamasina is the national stadium of Madagascar, set in a natural amphitheatre below the royal hill in central Antananarivo. It is the country's principal venue for football matches, athletics and major state ceremonies, including independence celebrations. The stadium's setting is striking, hemmed by the slopes of the upper town with the Queen's Palace visible on the ridge above. Alongside sporting fixtures it has served as a gathering place for political and cultural events in the capital.
