The Parliament Building in Lilongwe houses Malawi's National Assembly and was built with Chinese assistance after the seat of parliament moved from Zomba. Its modern chamber and offices form part of the planned capital that developed around the New City area from the 1970s. The complex is used for legislative sessions and state occasions and sits among the ministries and diplomatic missions of the administrative centre. It reflects Malawi's post-independence institution-building.
