The oldest public square in Cape Town, this large open space in front of the City Hall has served as a military parade ground, market and gathering place since the era of the Dutch East India Company. A weekly market fills it with stalls, and it hosted the enormous crowd that greeted Nelson Mandela on his release in 1990. Fringed by historic facades and overlooked by the flanks of the Castle of Good Hope, the square remains a busy civic hub. Football fans famously packed it during the 2010 World Cup.
