The Grand Mosque of Conakry is one of the largest mosques in West Africa, built in the 1980s with Saudi funding and capable of holding tens of thousands of worshippers. Its four tall minarets and broad domed prayer hall dominate a hillside in the Guinean capital. The grounds contain the tombs of national figures, including the country's first president. As the principal Islamic monument of Conakry, it is both a place of mass prayer and a site of national memory, drawing worshippers and visitors alike.
