The IFAN Museum of African Arts, on Place Soweto near the presidential palace, is one of West Africa's oldest museums, founded in 1936 under the French colonial research institute now known as the Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noire. Its collection spans masks, statuary, textiles and tools from across the former French colonies. Galleries trace ritual and daily life among Sahelian and forest peoples, with strong holdings of Dogon and Baga carvings. The compact colonial-era building makes it an accessible introduction to regional culture.
