Arch 22 is a monumental gateway at the entrance to Banjul, erected to commemorate the military coup of 22 July 1994 that brought a new government to power in the Gambia. Rising some three storeys, the pale ceremonial arch spans the road into the capital and houses a small museum and viewing gallery in its upper level. From the top, visitors survey the city, the surrounding streets, and the Atlantic beyond. Despite its controversial origins, the arch has become one of Banjul's most recognisable landmarks.
