This large public square lies between the Red Castle and the seafront in central Tripoli, the ceremonial heart of the Libyan capital. Framed by Italian-era arcaded buildings, it has borne several names through the colonial, monarchical and republican eras and served as the stage for the city's major political gatherings. Palms and open paving stretch toward the harbour, and the fortress rises at one edge. Long the focus of Tripoli's civic life, the square remains the point from which the surrounding medina and modern avenues fan out.
