This early nineteenth-century mosque in the Tripoli medina is among the most richly decorated in Libya, celebrated for its imported marble columns, glazed tiles and finely carved plaster. Built by an Ottoman naval officer, it reflects the wealth and connections of the city during that era. An octagonal minaret rises above the surrounding lanes, and the interior glows with coloured tilework brought from across the Mediterranean. Tucked among the medina's narrow streets, the mosque is a jewel of Ottoman-period craftsmanship in the Libyan capital.
