This compact medieval fortress guards the seaward corner of the Hammamet medina, its stone walls rising directly above the beach. Built as a coastal stronghold to watch for raiders, it later formed part of the defences enclosing the old town. Visitors climb its ramparts and tower for sweeping views over the whitewashed houses, the harbour and the curve of the bay. Set against the turquoise Mediterranean, the kasbah is the defining image of Hammamet and a favourite subject for photographers exploring the resort town's historic heart.
