This vast modern mosque in Constantine ranks among the largest in Africa, its pair of tall minarets and central dome visible from across the ravine-cut city. Completed in the mid-1990s and named for the nineteenth-century resistance leader, it also houses an Islamic university within its precinct. The interior blends contemporary construction with traditional Maghrebi decoration in tilework and carved plaster. Set on a plateau above the gorges of the Rhummel, the complex is both a place of worship and a centre of scholarship.
