The Grand Mosque of Meknes is the principal congregational mosque of the old city, with origins in the Almoravid period and major reconstruction under the Almohads and later dynasties. One of the largest mosques in the medina, it is distinguished by its long prayer hall, richly carved wooden entrance canopies and a green-tiled minaret rising above the lanes. Set close to the Bou Inania Madrasa, it has anchored religious life in the merchant quarter for centuries. Its worked doorways can be admired from the surrounding streets.
