Bab Berdaine is a monumental gate in the northern ramparts of the Meknes medina, built under Sultan Moulay Ismail around the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. Flanked by two robust square towers, its horseshoe arch is framed by bands of carved brick and stone decoration and green tilework, forming an imposing entrance to the old town. It opens onto a large cemetery and the Berdaine quarter beyond. One of several grand gateways ringing the city, it testifies to the scale of Meknes as an imperial capital.
