The Mosque of Altinbugha al-Maridani in the Darb al-Ahmar district is a fourteenth-century Mamluk building notable for reusing ancient columns and for one of the earliest surviving wooden screens separating its courtyard from the prayer hall. The interior preserves richly decorated stucco, colored glass and an inlaid mihrab beneath a painted ceiling. A shaded garden grows within the courtyard, an unusual survival. Built by a son-in-law of the ruling sultan, it ranks among the finer mosques of the quarter and rewards close attention.
