This landmark bridge links central Cairo with Gezira Island across the Nile and is guarded at each end by pairs of large bronze lion statues that have become city emblems. The present steel structure dates from the early twentieth century, replacing an older crossing on the same site. Its wide pedestrian walkways are a popular gathering place in the evenings, offering views of the river, feluccas and the illuminated skyline. Close to Tahrir Square and the opera grounds, it is one of the most photographed spots along the waterfront.
