Mount Qasioun is the mountain that rises directly above Damascus, forming the northern backdrop to the city and offering the classic panorama over the ancient capital. From viewpoints along its slopes visitors look down on the sprawl of the old and new city and the surrounding orchards of the Ghouta. The mountain is wrapped in legend, including traditions linking it to the biblical story of Cain and Abel. Cafés and terraces line the road that climbs its flank, drawing residents in the evenings to watch the lights of Damascus spread out below.
