Marjeh Square, sometimes called Martyrs' Square, is a central plaza in Damascus that has long been a focal point of the modern city. At its centre stands a bronze monument commemorating the first telegraph line between Damascus and the Hejaz, topped by a small model of a mosque. Laid out in the late Ottoman period, the square became associated with executions of nationalist figures, giving rise to its martyrs' name. Surrounded by old hotels, it marks the boundary between the walled old city and newer districts.
