The Tekkiye Mosque is an Ottoman religious complex on the bank of the Barada River in Damascus, designed in the 16th century by the celebrated architect Mimar Sinan. Commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, it served as a mosque and hospice for pilgrims bound for Mecca. Its striped stonework, slender pencil minarets, and lead-covered domes are classical Ottoman in style, more familiar in Istanbul than the Levant. The adjoining courtyards, once caravanserai and kitchens, house craft markets, beside the national museum.
