A medieval monastery in a wooded valley of central Georgia, its main domed church built around the 12th and 13th centuries in the classic style of the period. The exterior is decorated with fine stone carving, and the complex is enclosed by later fortified walls. According to tradition the monastery was attacked and its monks killed during an invasion by Timur. Set in a quiet fold of the hills, it remains an active religious site and a place of pilgrimage, appreciated by visitors for its architecture and serene surroundings.
