As the ancient capital of the Georgian kingdom, Mtskheta gathered churches whose artistry still marks the high point of medieval architecture in the Caucasus. Its historic monuments — chief among them the great cathedral and the hillside church above the town — testify to the cultural and spiritual achievement of a kingdom at the crossroads of Christian traditions. UNESCO inscribed the historical monuments of Mtskheta as a World Heritage Site in 1994.
