A broad ceremonial square on the left bank of Astana surrounded by several of the capital's flagship institutions, including the national museum and a tall monument column. It was laid out as a stage for national celebrations, military parades and public gatherings, its open paving able to hold large crowds. The Kazakh Eli monument at its centre is topped by a mythical bird and ringed by relief panels depicting the country's history. The square is especially lively during independence and Nauryz festivities.
