Banyunibo is a ninth-century Buddhist temple standing alone in a hollow amid the ricefields south of Prambanan, its name meaning dripping water. Its single main building, crowned by a stupa and flanked by rows of small subsidiary shrines, is decorated with finely carved reliefs of deities and a goddess of fertility above its niches. Long buried and later restored, the temple sits in a peaceful rural setting far quieter than the great complexes nearby.
