Baluarte de San Diego is one of the oldest stone fortifications of Intramuros, the walled Spanish colonial city at the heart of Manila. Its circular bastion, begun in the late 16th century, once anchored the seaward defences and guarded the mouth of the Pasig River. Excavated and restored after wartime destruction, its ramparts, foundations, and landscaped gardens are now open to visitors. Climbing the walls offers views over the old city, and the site helps convey the scale of the fortress that once ringed the capital.
