The Rizal Monument in Manila marks the burial place of the national hero Jose Rizal, whose writings helped inspire the Philippine independence movement. Erected in the early 20th century after an international design competition, it features a bronze figure of Rizal before an obelisk, guarded around the clock by sentries. Standing within the sprawling park named for him, it is the point from which distances in the country are measured and the setting for the annual commemoration of his execution.
