Qargha Lake is a reservoir in the hills just west of Kabul, formed by a dam and long serving as the capital's favourite outdoor escape for boating, picnics and weekend strolls along its shores. Ringed by low mountains, the lake offers a change of air from the crowded city and supports a strip of cafes, paddle boats and recreation grounds. It has featured in the city's leisure life for generations, though its fortunes have risen and fallen with the country's security. The open water and mountain backdrop remain its draw.
