Kabul Zoo lies beside the Kabul River in the west of the capital and holds a notable place in the city's public life despite the hardships it has endured through decades of conflict. Badly damaged during the civil war of the 1990s, when it became known internationally for the plight of a lone surviving lion, it was later rehabilitated with outside help and reopened as a recreation ground for families. It now houses a modest collection of native and other animals. As one of the few open leisure spaces in Kabul it draws large weekend crowds.
